Wow what a new experience!!!!
Last Sunday I attended my first market at the Tas Farm Gate Market, this market is held in Melville Street in Hobart and runs from 9am to 1pm. The week before was a practice run as the weather was so bad that the market had to be cancelled due to risks of gazebos blowing away and injuring someone. This was a good way for me to see if I could put the gazebo up by myself though and I did a good job even in that weather so I was confident that I could do it at anytime and in any weather. I bought along our free range eggs, parsley, spinach, rosemary, dried apples, blueberries and blackberries, flowers and yams. All these sold really well and the eggs went in the first 5mins of the market, so if you are after our eggs I think that you have to be early. The day was a great success and very busy. I know that in time, reputation will get around that we are there and will get busier, especially with more fresh produce. I like taking great pride in how I present our products and hopefully this will pay off in the long run, I have now also found out that I have got on to the casual pool for the Salamanca Markets so I am all of a sudden going to have to ramp up production which does not bother me as I love making the Dukkah and playing on the farm. One of our retailers has also informed me that they would like to take our Dukkah to a Gluten Free event on the weekend and this is also very exciting. The farm is looking pretty soggy at the moment with all the rain and produce is growing slowly as there is not much sun around, but it is still looking pretty good. I have just harvested some of our Romenesco Broccoli and this tastes really nice. This is a heritage variety and has spiral heads which look amazing. Our new addition to the family, Bodie, the Kelpie x Smithfield Coolie is loving chasing the chickens around so this will have to be curbed otherwise I will not have any eggs to take to the markets. He is a wonderful puppy, he loves following me around the farm and pretending that he is bigger than he really is. He loves playing with the goats, although I think that they will be getting one over him shortly. Well better get going. I am working on the details for my Basic Farm Skills for women course which will be held towards the end of the year when the weather gets warmer and drier. This course will be a full hands on course including how to back a trailer, basic fencing and the use of hand tools. Keep and eye on the website
